World Health Organisation issues guidance on COVID Controlled Human Infection Studies.

The Controlled Human Infection Model (CHIM) studies can be of immense benefit in accelerating and choosing the best candidates for vaccine development against COVID-19.

Many thanks to those who were in the groups who have been working on this, and fed information into this guidance and the WHO itself for producing such guidance at speed.

The concept of an independent ethics committee for such studies is a particularly good idea; Criterion 7 “SARS-CoV-2 challenge studies should be reviewed by a specialized independent committee”. This should ensure that both experts and laypeople who are familiar with the concept of CHIMs consider carefully the multiple complexities of such studies.
